The Arts, Culture and Heritage Department of the City of Johannesburg, in collaboration with Soweto Theatre, is hosting a commemorative dialogue and concert under the theme “Embo – Remembering and Re-membering our Essence”.

The concert is curated to give a platform for culturally inspired musical offerings that draw from the wealth of our indigenous cultures in South Africa. It features the following acts.

Volley Nchabeleng

Volley Nchabeleng is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, teacher, and percussionist.

For over 20 years, Volley has toured the globe as a performer, producer, and educator, and he’s Internationally respected as one of the greatest exponents of African indigenous instruments.

Xhanti Nokwali

Xhanti Nokwali’s music speaks to the many injustices that are a continuous experience for the majority of Africans across the world, it offers collective self-reflection, as a way to reconnect with culture and identity, as a step towards universal harmony.

The messages within his music are Pan Africanism, identity, culture, and that unity is the key for liberation, to unify within and with universal existence.

He leans into his vulnerability, using his voice and writing to express his emotions and connection to the heritage of being umXhosa, this is a space of healing which is extended to all who interact with the work.

Banned from the Land

Banned from the Land is a duo consisting of storyteller, Amandla Akhona and recording artist Xhanti Nokwali. They are multi-instrumentalists, singer-songwriters who captivate audiences by blending vocals, guitar, alto saxophone and a host of indigenous instruments: uHadi, uMrhubhe, isitolotolo to name a few.

Their sound is inspired by the melodic structures, rhythmic patterns and harmonic textures of abaNtu, drawing very deeply from the Xhosa tribes. Within that, one can clearly hear influences of classical, jazz and afro soul, resounding from the background and training of the individual artists, who have come together to explore the possibilities of all these elements.
