Daniel van Tonder and team win 2023 Joburg Open Pro-Am

South African professional golfer Daniel van Tonder and his amateur teammates, Michael Naidoo, Renier Louw and Lex Kriel, won the Joburg Open Pro-Am and counted in 93 points.

The four winners were announced on Tuesday, 21 November 2023, after a day of great golf on the fairways of the Houghton Golf Club.

Second place went to professional Zander Lombard and his team of Neil Freeman, JD de Villiers and Darren Roy, counted out 93 points. Hot on their heels in third place with 91 points were professional Wilco Nienaber and teammates Thomas Abt, Mohammed Saloojee and Craig Rohland.

Sipho Twala won nearest to the pin for hole 16, and Bongi Duma won nearest to the pin for hole seven and to top it all off hit a hole in one. Rene Matthee won the longest drive for hole three and Mark Goosen won longest drive for hole five.

Cllr Margaret Arnolds, the newly elected Speaker of Council in the City of Johannesburg, and Cllr Dada Morero, the Member of Mayoral Committee for Finance, attended the event with delegates and players.

Morero emphasised the iconic status of the tournament and its impact on the city’s economic development. He said that through the years, Johannesburg has strategically positioned itself as a top destination for sports, tourism and a hub for opportunities.

“The City takes pride in its continued contribution to the broader scale of economic development, and the Joburg Open stands out as a remarkable driver of economic spinoff,” said Cllr Morero.

He added that the tournament has become more than just a golf event but an international occasion that attracts attention, investment and diverse opportunities.

The pro-am allows amateurs and professional golfers to play together as part of the build-up to the Joburg Open tournament that will tee off on Thursday, 23 November 2023.

The Joburg Open is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and the DP World Tour and will be played over four days and end on Sunday, 26 November 2023.

The winner will share in a prize purse of 1.5 million euros (equivalent to R20.5 million) with players who make the cut.
