Nu Metro Showcases the Power of the Big Screen Experience at Hyde Park Corner
Hyde Park Corner, Johannesburg — Members of the media and key stakeholders gathered for an exclusive showcase hosted by Nu Metro Theatres at the cinema complex in Hyde Park Corner, highlighting the immersive experiences offered by the cinema group—from VIP luxury to cutting-edge 4DX screenings.
Nu Metro has expanded its footprint to 20 cinema complexes, including new locations in Maputo, Mozambique and Lusaka, Zambia. They will also be adding Tygervalley and Mimosa Mall to their slate in 2026. With recent acquisitions such as Bedford Square, Gateway, Cavendish, and Riverside, the group solidifies its position as a market leader. Among the most anticipated innovations is ScreenX—Africa’s first panoramic viewing experience using multi-projection technology to deliver a 270-degree screen—soon available at Gateway.
According to data shared by Cinevation, cinema attendance is rising, with over 2.1 million regular moviegoers monthly. More than 4.6 million South Africans visit cinemas up to six times a year, debunking the myth that the movie-going habit is fading post-pandemic.
The event’s discussions centred on three core themes: ticket pricing, content diversity, and support for South African films. Strategic partnerships with financial institutions like Absa, Nedbank, and Momentum were spotlighted, showcasing efforts to make cinema outings more accessible through subsidy programs and loyalty club concessions.
“Cinema tickets for a family of four are now more affordable than they were in 2019,” remarked Menen Muthial, Business analyst at Nu Metro—dispelling the belief that ticket prices are prohibitive.
With an exciting lineup of Hollywood blockbusters set to release over the next 18 months, Nu Metro is also shifting the spotlight toward homegrown talent. Andries Basson, Operations Executive for Nu Metro Films, affirmed a renewed commitment to premium local productions and robust partnerships with South African production houses. Bigger premieres, tailored events, and meaningful recognition are on the horizon for the country’s creatives.
Guests were treated to a bespoke culinary spread curated by Executive Chef David M, who oversees Nu Metro’s gourmet menu offerings that elevate the VIP cinema experience.
The overarching message? Nu Metro isn’t just about watching movies—it’s about the experience. With bold investments and a clear vision, the cinema group is reaffirming what audiences across
South Africa already know: cinema is well and truly alive.
