Girls at Bramley Primary receive dignity packs

Joburg Ladies Open and Birdies for Dignity ended on a high note after more than 300 girls from Bramley Primary School in northern Johannesburg received dignity packs on Monday, 22 April 2024.

The Joburg Ladies Open international golf tournament in collaboration with Spar launched a Birdies for dignity drive. During the tournament’s Pro-Am over R13 000 was raised through the initiative. Players were fined R 50 for each ball that landed in a water pond and proceeds went towards the initiative.

The dignity packs consisted of sanitary towels, soap, a washcloth, toothbrush, deodorant, and other hygiene products.

Bongi Mokaba, the City’s Director of Event Management, said through the initiative the City of Johannesburg is contributing to ensuring that the dignity of a girl child is maintained.

Cllr Margaret Arnolds, the Speaker of the City of Joburg Council, presented the dignity packs to grade 7 and grade 6 girls at Bramley Primary School. She expressed her commitment to adopting the school, promising continued support beyond the initial donation. Drawing from her own experiences as an abuse and rape survivor, she encouraged young girls to strive for their goals regardless of their background.

She highlighted her ongoing initiative to support needy households and victims of abuse and rape in her community, emphasising her dedication to serving as a public figure. As she adopted Bramley Primary School, she intended to provide further assistance, including donations of school uniforms and shoes, fulfilling her mission to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

Noko Maila, the Principal of Bramley Primary, said the donation contributed to ensuring that pupils maintain good hygienic practice, which is essential for building confidence and overall health wellbeing. “When girls have access to these products it enables them to stay in school and participate in educational activities including sport. We are deeply grateful for your support.”

Mercy Mogano, a member of the school governing body, commended Cllr Arnolds for her commitment to partnering with the school and expressed her appreciation towards the City for the generous donation of dignity packs.

“We appreciate the donation. Girls, love yourself and respect your bodies. Boys, treat your sisters (girls) with love and the dignity they deserve,” said Mogano.

Deputy head girl, Simphiwe Sibanda, thanked the City for the donation on behalf of the school and learners. “Thank you for choosing to make a difference in our school. Your donation will make a huge impact by restoring and maintaining the dignity of a girl child. Your generosity has touched our hearts and we’re grateful for your kindness. May God bless you.”
