Q&A with Afro-pop and Amapiano artist Zee Nxumalo

PUMA South Africa: When did you first feel the drive to make music?

Zee Nxumalo: I’ve always loved singing. As a child, I would sing in church, and while I didn’t realize how special my voice was, my aunts always made sure I sang at family gatherings and funerals. They believed in me even before I knew my potential. Performing in public never scared me – it felt natural, like it was where I belonged.

You are a law student at the University of Johannesburg, but when did you realise you could make music for a career?

It only really hit me in 2023. Up until then, music was just something I loved doing, but last year, everything changed. I started seeing the possibilities, and when I realized people were willing to pay for me to perform, it was a game-changer. That’s when I knew I could turn my passion into a career.

Lots of young and old people dream of a career in the music, but the industry is complicated. How did the doors open and enable you to make this a reality?

Honestly, social media opened all the doors for me. I remember being invited to tour the UK, and I couldn’t believe it. I kept thinking, “Why me? How did they even find my music?” But when I stepped on that stage and heard the crowd singing every word to my songs, I knew it was real. Social media has this amazing power to connect artists with fans across the world, even without big campaigns.

What attracted you to work with PUMA?

PUMA has always been that aspirational brand for me. When I lived in Braam, I’d walk past their store and see people carrying those iconic PUMA shoe boxes. I couldn’t afford even the smallest item back then, but I always told myself, “One day, I’m coming back for those boxes.” To now be an official ambassador – it’s a full-circle moment that means everything to me.

Now you are an official brand ambassador. How did the relationship with PUMA develop?

It all started with a simple gesture. Hayden (Manuel, PUMA SA Sportstyle Marketing Manager) spotted me on social media and sent me a pair of sneakers. That was it – a small start, but I could see the bigger picture. I’ve always been someone who believes in manifesting dreams, and this was no exception.

You feature in PUMA’s Speedcat campaign- a sneaker inspired by motorsport, F1 specifically. Are you a motorsport fan?

I wouldn’t call myself a motorsport fan, but I have a serious love for fast cars. There’s something about the thrill and elegance of speed that excites me. And let me tell you, owning a Mercedes Benz is definitely on my vision board!

Describe the feeling when the crowd sings your songs back to you?

It’s indescribable. Hearing the crowd sing along is like they’re performing with me—it’s pure magic. It reminds me why I do this, and every time it happens, it feels like the first time. I’ll never take that for granted.

Brenda Fassie walked a road which created worlds for new young stars like you to explore. You were a guest vocalist on a song which samples Weekend Special, tell me what Brenda means to you?

Brenda Fassie is a legend. Her music, her energy, and her fearlessness paved the way for so many of us. Being part of a song that honours her legacy was a huge honour for me. It’s impossible not to feel inspired by her. She was and still is a force.

You released your new album on 15 November. Any thoughts you would like to share with your fans?

To my fans, thank you for riding this journey with me. This album is so personal, and every track was created with love and intention. I hope it speaks to you, makes you feel something, and becomes part of the soundtrack to your life. Keep streaming, sharing, and vibing—it means the world to me!
