Durban Girls’ College annual Galleon Awards honour Moses Tembe & Andrea Kleinloog
Durban Girls’ College (DGC) recently recognised individuals within their community that have served the school with distinction or brought honour to its name through their achievements.
The Galleon Benefactors’ Award was presented to Mr Moses Tembe, respected Durban business leader, philanthropist, and community builder. In honour of his late daughter and talented chef, Anele Tembe (DGC class of 2017), the Tembe family’s generous contribution enabled the transformation of the high school Library – now the Anele Tembe Library. This beautiful space stands as a tribute to Anele’s spirit and a reflection of Mr Tembe’s belief in education, empowerment and the value of investing in the next generation.
The Galleon Alumni Achievement Award was awarded to Andrea Kleinloog (DGC class of 2000), an acclaimed interior designer whose work has shaped the design landscape both locally and internationally. Andrea was commissioned in 2022 to redesign the high school library – a project completed in 2024 that beautifully embodies the essence of Durban Girls’ College: tradition, excellence and innovation. Her professional journey reflects the enduring impact of a DGC education and the legacy of its alumnae worldwide.
This year, the Durban Girls’ College Galleon Awards recipients were presented with newly designed trophies, created by former pupil, Kirsten Goss (DGC class of 1992). Each handcrafted piece features Goss’s signature brass Søt form mounted on a base of lapis lazuli – a lasting symbol of artistry, connection and legacy.
Durban Girls’ College extended heartfelt gratitude to the recipients for their exceptional contributions to the College. Their vision, values and dedication will continue to inspire generations of girls to lead with courage and purpose.
