The Final Whistle: Popular Mobile-Only Football Package Axed in DStv Migration

In a move that has caught many budget-conscious football fans off guard, the popular mobile-only sports package that served as a cornerstone of the Showmax offering will not be making the jump to MultiChoice’s new digital home.

According to an exclusive report by Cash N Sport, the affordable tier—which provided standalone access to two major football leagues—is officially being retired. While other Showmax content is currently being folded into the DStv Stream app, this specific “mobile-only” sports experiment has been left off the roster.

A Blow to Affordable Access

The package was widely regarded as one of the best-performing products in the Showmax stable, offering a low-cost entry point for fans who didn’t want the burden of a full DStv subscription. By stripping away traditional broadcast overheads, the mobile-only model allowed viewers to stream live league action directly to their smartphones at a fraction of the usual price.

However, as MultiChoice consolidates its streaming efforts under the DStv Stream banner, that “lean” sports option is disappearing. Users who previously relied on the app for their weekly football fix will now be required to sign up for a standard DStv subscription or a DStv Stream package to continue watching.

The Strategy Shift

The decision to drop the package highlights a strategic pivot at MultiChoice. While the mobile-only tier was popular with users, it appears it no longer fits the current revenue model as the company navigates its transition under new ownership.

Industry insiders suggest that while the mobile-only sport model is dead for now, it might not stay buried forever. With Canal+ moving toward a total takeover and planning to eventually replace current platforms with a unified Canal+ app, there is a strong possibility that a similar high-performing mobile product could be revived under their leadership at a later date.

What This Means for Fans

For the immediate future, the “golden age” of ultra-cheap mobile football streaming has reached its end. Fans are left with two main choices:

  1. Upgrade to DStv Stream: Transition to the more expensive, comprehensive streaming packages.
  2. Traditional Satellite: Return to a hardware-based DStv decoder setup.

As the dust settles on the Showmax shutdown, many will be watching closely to see if Canal+ makes a play to win back the mobile-first audience that this package so successfully captured.
