Affies stun Grey as Derby Series delivers another cracking weekend
The King Price Derby Series delivered another weekend packed with fight, flair, and a few results that will keep school corridors buzzing for days.
In KwaZulu-Natal, St Charles and Glenwood could not be separated, playing to a thrilling 26–26 draw in beautiful sunny conditions. Both sides had chances to pull clear, but neither was prepared to blink in a contest that had all the edge expected from a proper schoolboy showdown.
Pretoria then took centre stage on a gorgeous winter’s day as Affies hosted Grey College in front of a massive, full-voiced crowd. And what a day it turned out to be for the home side. Affies held their nerve to beat Grey 28–21, claiming their first win over the Bloemfontein giants since 2015. For a fixture loaded with history, that result will taste especially sweet.
At Oakdale, sunny skies met muddy underfoot conditions as the hosts edged Outeniqua 27–21 in a tough, physical encounter. In Krugersdorp, the Wit Bulle of Monnas gave their supporters plenty to cheer about, beating Jeppe 47–29 on a warm afternoon at the Ras.
Attention now turns to 23 May, with another lively King Price Derby Series round on the cards. St Stithians welcome Parktown Boys’ High, who will be looking to bounce back after a narrow 24–21 loss to St David’s. Hoërskool Durbanville, fresh from a commanding 64–5 win over Tygerberg, host Bishops Diocesan College, who will be eager to respond after their defeat to Paarl Gim.
The headline act could well be Paul Roos Gimnasium against Paarl Boys’ High. Paul Roos come in after beating Rondebosch 41–17, while Boishaai arrive with momentum after overcoming giant-killers Stellenberg 29–7.
Voortrekker and Hoërskool Witteberg round out the weekend’s action, with both sides chasing momentum.
